This is a lovely jewellery set that consists of a pair of earrings, choker necklace and hand band in light blue and dark blue color beads. Professional series bead stringing material is used for the hand band (wrist band). The earrings are made using Designer series eye pins and French earwires. The earrings length (drop) is about 1 3/4 inches minus the ear hooks. The bracelet (hand band) length is about 7 inches. The choker necklace length is between 15 to 17 inches. The choker necklace retains its shape very well around the neck, for any size of wearer. The choker necklace material is also made from stainless steel and is corrosion and tarnish resistant. The light blue beads have the design shape of a beacon or lantern, and they glow in the light and in the dark. Anya is a multi-facetted fashion designer who is the only Caribbean winner of the popular US television series, Project Runway. In Season 9 she wowed the judges and inspired millions with her Caribbean inspired resort wear collection. Anya has been designing since 2008 – as the T&T representative at the Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam, she had the opportunity to design some of her pageant wardrobe. In 2009, she launched her first collection Pilar, named after her younger brother.

Anya is passionate about living and working in her island home of Trinidad and turning logistical challenges into advantages. Sourcing fabrics in the Caribbean often means there is limited access to large quantities and a less than consistent supply. Anya’s business approach has been to deliberately produce small amounts of each new design. Certainly, this Limited Edition collection – allows each customer the commitment of knowing their purchase is exclusive.

By producing in Trinidad and Tobago, Anya has had the chance to work directly with the highly skilled practitioners who have been trained by her mentor and fellow Trinidadian designer, Meiling. Therefore the line is produced at the highest quality and attention to detail.

Anya’s love for her island and the Caribbean, has led her to a role in social activism, as co-founder and Director of The Together WI Foundation, which has been at the forefront of discussions, music creation and even protests about women’s rights and freedoms, art and activism.

An Entrepreneurial Mind

As an entrepreneur – her projects have been as chic and sophisticated as her designs. She is the co-founder and Design Strategist for social enterprise project – Nudge Caribbean, powered by Massy, where they grow interest in small, medium and micro enterprises with instore marketplaces – #MindfullyMade, #MicroisMighty. Anya has also opened and managed a co-working space called HOME; an avant garde – totally local boutique called Exhibit A and a spectacular café – HOME Cafe in Trinidad.

Additionally, in the last seven years, her love for Carnival was channeled into designing for the largest band in the Caribbean – Tribe. She has also been a co-creative director of The Lost Tribe in its inaugural year. She simultaneously developed the brand, cANYAval, an e-commerce site that sold “Monday Wear” and produced Carnival costumes for LA, Toronto, Barbados and Jamaica, in addition to creating Carnival-inspired events in various cities in the Caribbean and US. This experience is allowing her to segue into her newest venture, Wyldflower.

Janice Derrick was born in Trinidad and emigrated to the UK at the age of sixteen. Her love of all things creative led to her pursuing a degree in Silversmithing, Jewellery and Allied Crafts from the prestigious Sir John Cass faculty at London Guildhall University, graduating in 1996. The following year Janice received a Clerkenwell Award from the Clerkenwell Green Association to set up her studio near the heart of London’s jewellery quarter, Hatton Garden.

During the eight years her business was based in London she developed not only a sound local market but also exhibited and sold her work through galleries and museum shops across the UK, US, Europe and Japan. She also exhibited at prestigious craft shows such as the Chelsea Craft Fair and attended trade fairs in Munich, San Francisco and New York.

In 2005, Janice had had enough of city life and the British weather and returned home to Trinidad where she continues to develop her jewellery and silversmithing practice.

Simplicity, clean line, the structure of manmade or natural forms and the delicacies of nature that Janice observes in the world around her, are what inspires her designs. The later work of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright and the Bauhaus movement were great influences during university and their hold remains.

A keen observation of people and life in general usually provides the final details on designs – the quality that makes the piece wearable as opposed to just being a beautiful object.

Every piece of Janice Derrick Jewellery is designed and handmade at her studio from different colours of gold, sterling and oxidised silver, precious and semi-precious gems and beads as well as combinations of these within the same piece. She also enjoys working to commission and often produces one-off exhibition pieces where she tries to push the boundaries of scale and what is considered wearable, without compromising comfort. Janice aims to create jewellery that is contemporary yet lasting and is not dictated by trends.

Janice has exhibited her work in Germany, France, Ireland, the US, Trinidad, Japan and across the UK.

My journey as an artist of jewelry

Hi my name is Janice Learmond-Criqui and as an artist of jewelry, I chose ShopCaribe because I wanted my jewelry to be purchased by clients from around the world. ShopCaribe's name is what encouraged me to be a part of their website. It speaks to the Caribbean and if as a client I wanted jewelry accessories from the Caribbean, ShopCaribe would be the place to go and shop.

I got into jewelry as a stress reliever. I had a high stress job and when I got home, I could not unwind. One day while on holiday in Tobago I came across websites that taught you how to make necklaces and earrings. I love the wire bending but realized that it needed a lot of practice. So I purchased the materials and tools and my journey started.

I made so many pieces that I started giving them away as gifts. It gave me pleasure to see the look of happiness when people received my jewelry. I went to a Christmas Bazaar to sell my pieces and there was a woman who liked one of the pieces. She said she did not have the money to buy it but I could see that she was in love with the piece. So I took the piece, put it into a gift bag and gave it to her wishing her Merry Christmas. She was so taken aback by my kindness that she started to cry. I hugged her and said that she was special as I felt a connection with this woman. She said that no one had shown her such kindness in a long time.

Each piece is handmade and made with lots of love. Each piece is a treasure to me. So for those who purchase my pieces I do hope that you will enjoy them as I enjoyed making them.
