‘What is art?’ came to mind for me often in the last few weeks. There is work done with a high level of technical skill and work done without any formal art education. Is one worth more than the other? This I believe is up to an individual to decide for themself.

The explanation that makes sense to me is one given by a friend a few years ago - that art is one person’s expression of their soul possibly with the result that a viewer connects with theirs. I like this. It feels inclusive and challenges the art world, the pricing and value of art. Who for example decides that a painting is worth millions of dollars...... and should it???

This is the second piece I did with a new palette knife. It is my art - expressing myself in a way that felt most authentic. I could say that 'I’m excited, calm, intrigued, inquisitive' but to paint these emotions/states is a whole other ballgame. I would eg be able to give rise to a stroke that had its origin in a recess of me that I didn’t even know existed before meeting it at that instant. It is this that I create for.

I got a palette knife and whenever I get a new tool for art, it’s the most exciting thing. It’s said that when learning something new, to learn the rules first and then they can be broken or so that they can be broken. I understand this but I like to jump into it, to let the tool (and the moment) speak to me - not letting a video or an article influence what will happen. With this piece, in which I’m continuing working with greens, different tools came out (wedges, brushes and my fingers). It felt great to play, to experiment and let the tools and the paint and the canvas and my intuition lead the way.

Freedom seems to be a word that comes to mind when I paint. The freedom to create as I want. But is it really freedom? Aren't we influenced by what we hold inside and where our mind and heart are?

Starting this piece, I was interested in the pure joy of making brushstrokes, feeling the paint and using different amounts of pressure and then the idea of approaching a clearing in the forest came up - ever so slightly.

Landscapes seem to be often in the back of my mind when it comes to painting - it is after all one of the first things we learn in art class. It's a good memory and I like having nature as an inspiration.

The colour 'red' strikes a strong, joyful chord with me - it's the colour I feel most connected to. 'They' say that blue is the calm colour but red makes me feel alive, connected and thus.....calm.

I like the informality of my small paintings on canvas board like this one. I would place them around the kitchen, on my desk, bedside table, etc to give a little bit of colour and life to a space. They can be easily moved around and propped up against different objects. It’s a great way to add some art to your living space or office. They can stand alone or grouped in 2's, 3's, 4's and/or combined with other art or objects to create a special display.

These small paintings come with easels for displaying. They can, of course, be framed (as shown) and either I can assist here or you can get it done whenever you'd like to.

IN THIS PIECE, I used a new paint - with a matte satin finish and a very small amount of a 3D glossy paint which doesn't catch your eye initially. I like this contrast and element of surprise.

Done in an expressionistic, non-representational style, I was playing with different textures and this palette of magenta, blue, metallic white and a violet with glitter. The last 2 shimmer in the light depending on how light falls on to it.

I’ve been thinking about the ‘There is Something in the Water’ collection that I did last year that dealt with aspects of the planet's water that I love and ones that cause me concern. Oil from oil spills, pearls and blues (and reefs, coastal erosion, flooding) have been on my mind a lot - the horror of oil spills vs. the blues of the sea and all the life in it. I painted this in response to that. The actual process of gently and softly painting with brushes vs. imposing 3D paint from above in an aggressive manner with little regard for what I was covering heightened the contrast.

This is one of the first paintings I did on canvas when I started working on canvas again. That was 2018.

Painting this, there was a great sense of freedom, exploration. I had been working on only T-shirts for 4-5 years before and there are things you can do on a hard surface that you can't do on things that move easily. Painting on both surfaces are different and feel equally important to me.

‘Polka dot’ pendant from the ‘There is Something in the Water’ (2019) collection that addressed different aspects of the earth’s water that I love and ones that cause me worry. This pendant was inspired by the oil in oil spills. The necklace sits inside the frame in the back of the painting and is not visible on the easel or if the painting is on the wall. Shown on easel with its matching brooch and on hand-painted organic cotton fabric. Small paintings that can adorn a variety of spaces at home or office.

How can we cut down on the amount of stuff we have and be more mindful about the impact of what we own on the planet and on people?

I love having art all around me - it fills my soul and connects me with its maker. And I love jewellery (affordable jewellery). I create small paintings that can be worn and this takes care of the big issues for me (the mining of precious metals and stones destroys landscapes and workers are often treated and paid poorly).

This piece is part of the ‘There is Something in the Water’ (2019) collection where I referenced aspects of planet’s water that I love and ones that cause me concern.

This piece is inspired by pearls (which I love), oil spills and blood. The necklace can be tied at different lengths and sits inside the frame so it is not visible when the painting is on an easel or on the wall (as shown).
