Fig trees (common name for banana trees in Trinidad) offer leaves with no end of inspiration. This is the print of one such leaf from a clump that I planted years ago. (See photos for more detail of artwork and of plant)

Paintings to wear.

I find this idea intriguing - merging ‘art’ with something to wear. Wearing paintings!

‘What is art?’ came to mind for me often in the last few weeks. There is work done with a high level of technical skill and work done without any formal art education. Is one worth more than the other? This I believe is up to an individual to decide for themself.

The explanation that makes sense to me is one given by a friend a few years ago - that art is one person’s expression of their soul possibly with the result that a viewer connects with theirs. I like this. It feels inclusive and challenges the art world, the pricing and value of art. Who for example decides that a painting is worth millions of dollars...... and should it???

This is the second piece I did with a new palette knife. It is my art - expressing myself in a way that felt most authentic. I could say that 'I’m excited, calm, intrigued, inquisitive' but to paint these emotions/states is a whole other ballgame. I would eg be able to give rise to a stroke that had its origin in a recess of me that I didn’t even know existed before meeting it at that instant. It is this that I create for.

I got a palette knife and whenever I get a new tool for art, it’s the most exciting thing. It’s said that when learning something new, to learn the rules first and then they can be broken or so that they can be broken. I understand this but I like to jump into it, to let the tool (and the moment) speak to me - not letting a video or an article influence what will happen. With this piece, in which I’m continuing working with greens, different tools came out (wedges, brushes and my fingers). It felt great to play, to experiment and let the tools and the paint and the canvas and my intuition lead the way.

I have a lot of unfinished work (clothes, canvas/board, discarded materials) and decided instead of starting new pieces to finish what I started for 2 reasons - to not waste the earth’s resources and the people-power that were put into making those items! and b/c I don’t have money to buy new T-shirts or canvasses. Even though I’m very grateful for the sales and support I’ve been receiving, it’s amazing how you can watch your money when you put your mind to it!!! (when you’re trying to ‘adult’ - whatever that means 😳)

This piece was started 3 years ago. I was doing linocuts at the time and T-shirts with fellow creative Cody Caspa Braithwaite. He did the stencil of a squid. It stayed with the squid and the linocut until earlier this year.

A few months ago, I painted on the front and again it ‘sat.’ I recently ‘finished’ it.

But it’s not finished! I see that so much more can be done on it over time. There are all those ‘empty’ spaces. These can be painted or words added, or things sewn on. These are some of the ways we can keep what we have or acquire for as long as possible and be sustainable in how we dress.

A *WHITE* tank top has a certain appeal - it’s fresh and clean - so I kept the work on this to a minimum to maintain that.

As with all clothes, it can be given new looks over time. Strips of colour similar in shape to the pink one can be added. More text maybe - of something the wearer wants to express and raise awareness of or to express their love for their boo - the future looks are only limited by the imagination and therefore it is unlimited!

Keeping and reusing clothes as long as possible reduces how much resources we keep taking from the earth and how much energy we use which emits the greenhouses gasses that are warming our planet.

This piece is part of the new ‘Choices’ Collection.

Young palm trees began to spring up around a mature one in the garden. To be able to witness a plant that I played around and gave me so much joy as a child when it was much smaller sending out young ones which in 40 years time would also be a grand presence is very interesting to me! It reminds me of the continuity of life and this I find soothing/reassuring.

The photographs of graphic buildings in Istanbul by photographer Shane Taremi were in my heart and mind during the period of working on this collection and served as inspiration also.

This is the first look of this top! It’s best for the planet and our pocket to reuse what we have. Over time, this 1 piece can be worked on to create new looks!! Please consider this in all your clothing.

On 'CHOICES':
Conventional cotton uses a lot of fertilizer and pesticide. We need to realign our relationship with nature. These chemicals land up in the air, soil and water where they wreak havoc on animal and plant life and eventually human life as they enter the food chain. Put in another way... could conventional cotton clothes be considered cancer-causing agents?

This piece is from my new collection, 'Choices'.

For the front, I did some work with bleach - rinsed and let it dry and then painted and printed a palm leaf.

On the back, I marked out an area hinting at an empty framed painting. This is to invite more work to be done in this space. Of course, work can be done anywhere.

The whole idea is that new looks be created over time instead of buying an actual new T-shirt. The owner can do this work themself, a designer can do an applique, another artist can lend their touch or I can do it.

Conventionally made cotton is very fertiliser and pesticide intensive and these chemicals wreak havoc on animal and plant life. As we become more mindful of our extensive impact on the planet, let's be mindful of our choices.

This is one of the pieces/paintings that I at last week's POS Fashion Week, from my new collection called ‘CHOICES’.

We are being called to have less impact on the earth – to take less resources from it. One way to do this is to use what we already have, and this includes clothing.

This shirt that was my father's was given a new look and life. I wanted to honour the check pattern that existed. Was inspired by this and by the stunning photographs in Boston photographer Shane Taremi's ‘Unreal Reality’ body of work (one of them is shown in the second-to-last photo). A building is built to last a long time – it also carries a history. A piece of clothing, like a building, could also last a long time. It has a history too and could be art - public art just like the buildings in Mr. Taremi’s photos. Shouldn’t everything around us be interesting?

I marked out rectangles to mimic the shapes of paintings that invite future work. A rectangle can be habitated by an orange custom-made applique. A square can have a red painting in it. The rectangle down the middle on the front can be done in lace. The possibilities are limited only by imagination.

This piece is from my new collection, ‘CHOICES.’

The best way to be sustainable in our clothing choices is to use what we already have. A new piece could be wanted but it doesn't have to mean an entirely new piece. It can come from what we already own.

This shirt was given new life in what became a lovely experience.

It was made, maybe, in India and I wondered who made it. I imagined it was a man. I imagined him working. I wondered if he enjoyed making it. I thought he was in his mid 30’s and that he did enjoy making it. It was well-made! - I wanted to honour him and his work.

Looking at the stitching and tracing it was meditative - felt reverent and I loved this process. We, 'he' and I worked on this shirt together.

This shirt's life could be extended with new looks over time. This is hinted at by the question marks in photo #7

This is from my new collection 'CHOICES'.

The strong floral pattern in this blouse gave me something to work with. I liked the colours and the pink made me think of using....well, the colour 'blue'...

On the front, a necklace inspired this work.

On the back, I wanted something different from the front (a different look when you’re walking away than when you’re facing someone). Recent work from designer Alexander McQueen, a sunflower from my garden (why stop with the existing florals - let's expand this garden!!!!) inspired this work.

There is so much space left on this. There are all those shapes that can be filled, dotted, made bigger, outlined with silver or gold or both or blue or black or green. The question marks hint at this.

It can then be made short-sleeved and then cut into a vest.

This is my vision of what sustainable fashion could be.

This is done in the way that Rorschack’s ink-blot drawings, that were used in psychological testing, were created.

I like working in an expressionistic style when painting - letting the work emerge from inside of me without too much rational thinking. I applied the paint in a similar manner on this piece and then folded the T-shirt. The image that emerges is a gift.

This piece is from the ‘There is Something in the Water’ collection that was inspired by my love of the planet’s waters and my concerns about them. This one in particular is inspired by pearls and coral reefs, the greens and blues of the water in the Gulf of Paria near where I live and the blood of fish.

I started paying more attention to what I am putting into the garbage - trying to prevent more stuff from going into overflowing landfills and plastic from entering our food-chain. I stopped throwing away my paint containers all together.

There are ALSO beautiful, differently shaped bits of paint that collect around the mouths of the containers with perfect circles in the middle (upper right hand corner) that are perfect for animals to eat or nibble on (and therefore belly-ache for fish!)

These circles could find a better use - in my work! and was the starting point for this piece.
