This is done in the way that Rorschack’s ink-blot drawings, that were used in psychological testing, were created.

I like working in an expressionistic style when painting - letting the work emerge from inside of me without too much rational thinking. I applied the paint in a similar manner on this piece and then folded the T-shirt. The image that emerges is a gift.

This piece is from the ‘There is Something in the Water’ collection that was inspired by my love of the planet’s waters and my concerns about them. This one in particular is inspired by pearls and coral reefs, the greens and blues of the water in the Gulf of Paria near where I live and the blood of fish.

I wrapped this T-shirt around a canvas and painted on it tricking my mind that I was paintings a piece that would go on a wall. I love this blurring of the line between art for a wall and art that could be worn. I want people to wear paintings.

Work is done on this piece just starting to go on to the back. It is my hope that it continues to be worked on - creating new looks - by myself or other people - it can eventually be the work of many hands.

Re-using what we have and making it last for as long as possible is so important as we try to take less from the earth.

My garden (and nature in general!) provide so much beauty - bird's singing, emerging flowers and shoots, the colours of a sunset, the sounds at night......

My garden also holds memories. I played endlessly with friends around this palm tree when it, and I, were much smaller. New plants have been springing up and it is wonderful to see the continuity of life - from a young plant to a large tree to young plants again. These are the prints of leaves from one of the young plants on an incredibly soft and thin organic bamboo and organic cotton tank top.

I’m mostly drawn to painting on a T-shirt as if it is canvas - literally, creating a painting that can be worn - I find that intriguing. Sometimes, I am drawn to creating a look with a central image alone - similar to the graphic Tees that were popular in the 80’s. This is one of those pieces.

It’s a one-off Hand-printed palm leaf and hand-painted organic cotton and sweatshop-free white T-shirt. A leaf from the young palm tree shown which came from the larger palm tree was used to create this piece.

I did this piece in response to a call for artwork for PRIDE Memorial 2020 that was hosted by 'Friends for Life' and 'Alliance for Justice and Diversity' in Trinidad.

I have been paralyzed with fear at various times of having HIV. A huge part of this was the stigma associated with being positive and I can only imagine what that loneliness and despair could feel like. I wanted in this piece to highlight a side of people that might be forgotten. 'So and so' isn't 'that guy who died of AIDS.' He had a whole life like everybody else. The broken words are about silence and from my own experience of having a love that could not be public. The gold is important for a sense that their lives should be celebrated and the simplicity of the design is for a sense of solemn reflection.

This is one of the simpler pieces I made using a young palm leaf. I made 2 other pieces with this leaf that are also available here at Shop Caribe!

This leaf is that of a young palm tree that has taken root in the garden. I grew up around the 'mother plant,' when it was much smaller and didn’t have a trunk. Seeing new plants coming up is heart-warming - I think of nature’s continuity and that of life. I hope the joy that my garden has given, and continues to give, me can now be extended to others through pieces such as this.

I like to sometimes use gold paint when working on clothes (as well as silver and 3-dimensional pearl paint) as they shimmer and shine and give some element of jewellery without actually needing to have real gold, silver or pearls (a lot of the available gold and silver jewellery are manufactured using processes that are toxic to the environment).

Why the need for shimmer and shine? For me, it’s the moment when it catches the light and just for that very quick instant, it’s a connection with magic - and it’s magic and awe that, for me, make life beautiful! - think as well of the sun shimmering off the water in the sea. Can we really want more??

This piece can be added to over time to create new looks - thereby taxing the earth less by buying entirely new clothes (and she needs that!!!!). More art can be added. It is amazing how much this can evolve over time. Imagine……………………….

This is an organic bamboo and organic cotton tank top (no chemicals were used in the growth of the crops). It was good to the earth :). It was also made by unionised workers in the US (people were honoured and respected in its production).

I like to try different techniques when working. In this piece, I wrapped the tank top around a piece of cardboard and painted on it as if it were a canvas. I used tools that have different edges, paintbrushes and my fingers to create the different textures.

To create this, I placed the tank top on a table and painted on it. When the front was finished and left to dry, I turned it over and painted the back.

I like treating clothes as if they are a piece of paper or a canvas. I put it on a table and then paint on it. I see it as ‘another painting’ and think the idea of wearing a painting very exciting. It will be like a living piece of art in my eyes – or a form of public art. This makes more sense to me than a piece of art being in a home. I like that, in this way, it is more accessible to more people.

I started painting this inspired by this large succulent in the garden which I have always loved. It is so expressive - just bursting with life. I think it's a beautiful plant.

I started from that point and then the piece evolved. I find this way of painting to be very satisfying.

This was created in various stages. The tank top was hung, pinned and folded on 2 parallel clothes-lines at varying heights to create a form that I found pleasing. Different solutions of paint were then poured on to it. It was then left to dry and this process was repeated a few times. Brushwork and stamping were done throughout the entire process and at the end to complete the design.

‘Carite after the La Brea Oil Spill IN 2013.’ Hand-painted unisex medium V-neck. Organic cotton, sweatshop-free (SOLD)

This piece is inspired by a large oil spill that took place off the coast of La Brea in Trinidad in 2013. The black central part is the hand-printed linocut print of a carite fish that has been affected by the oil spill. A carite is normally a long, narrow fish but after ingesting oil and the dispersants that were used in the clean-up, its whole biology has changed - it is now square or rhomboidal in shape, its tail is falling off and it now eats everything - trees, birds, people and houses.

How we mess with the environment is something, I believe strongly, that we need to pay much more attention to. We are trampling on too much - we are losing too much.

This is the print of a fig leaf (what is called a banana leaf in temperate countries) from a clump of them in the garden. I planted this many years ago on a whim and it’s emerged as a wonderful focal point and simultaneously - a marker - as one moves from a path to the patio area.
Often, when in the garden, something stands out - a leaf, a flower, a cloud, waves in the sea, the sound of a bird, a dried leaf, a lichen, a new shoot - and the connection I feel is wonderful. It’s as though it and I are one. I'd then cut it and use it making a few different pieces until as a friend said ‘the leaf finished doing its work.’ ☺️
