This was done when I started back painting on canvas after painting on T-shirts only for about 4 years. I had used new tools in this that were given to me and enjoyed the process of working with them in an expressionistic style.

‘Red’ has been a favourite colour of mine since childhood. I think it makes me feel alive or fires up something inside of me. The word ‘passion’ comes to mind. This Independence Day in Trinidad and Tobago, let’s live with PASSION TOGETHER - not divided as our recent elections showed us to be.

This was designed for and printed on fabric for designer Robert Young, of The Cloth, whose hashtag 'Trying to get out of a box stuck in a pattern' was used as inspiration. In the centre, is a figure vomiting as he tries to get out of a box - clad in prison-clothes stripes. The corners are wings of a butterfly.

It was printed on the fabric in a grid-pattern - in rows and columns. In this way, the corners formed a butterfly and the top-to-bottom band formed a long vertical band throughout the fabric.

This small painting can be displayed on an easel, hung on the wall and also be worn. I like that 1 object can serve multiple purposes - this cuts down on how much we take from the earth.

It is inspired by pearls, coral reefs, the sea and love.

I love jewellery but I don't like that gold, silver and precious stones are so expensive and that their mining is harmful to the environment. I created this wearable art piece as an affordable, more earth-, animal- and people-friendly alternative. This small painting can adorn a desk/dressing table and be hung on a wall.

I like the interest that gold offers in a painting. As light reflects off of it at different angles, the look of the whole painting changes - when 1 area shines brightest it brings out another particular area and so the piece is ever-changing - alive and ‘living’ as it were.

In December 2013, a large oil spill off the coast of La Brea in Trinidad caused a massive kill of marine life and birds. I grew up eating fish, including carite, that was caught in these waters but I stopped after the spill as I wasn't sure about the health of the fish anymore. In this piece, I imagine a changing carite - its shape changed from long and linear to round, its tail falling off and its future as a 'super-predator' that will eat people, trees, houses and birds.

A T-shirt was also printed with this linoblock and is also shown, as well as the first-cut of the linoblock. The organic cotton, unisex medium T-shirt costs US$54 (TT$360) and the first-cut print on acid-free paper costs US$100 (TT$700). NOTE: This print is currently out of stock. However, the first-cut print and the Hand-printed and painted T-shirt are still available.

Working on a square canvas is interesting - which way is ‘up’ is up to you/me. When painting this, I played with it as if it were a rotating serving tray or lazy Susan.

I like movement when painting - it is as if it is the way I can best express myself - it is usually dynamic, charged, explosive, quick, seldom slow - always meaningful. In this, there was pouring of paint, scraping, moulding and moving the paint gently, use of my fingers and work with brushes.

In this piece, there is a little more experimenting than in the other ones I was doing around the same time - because of this, it speaks to me a lot. There was more risk-taking and control and I like being able to switch between the 2. I was also using the colour purple - in this case a lavender which was new and a pleasure to work with.

This was done after Trinidad’s first Gay Pride parade in Aug 2018. Images from the parade were all over Facebook the next day - a Sunday - and while having feelings of great triumph, excitement and of being ALIVE, I also felt the stress of years of frustration and struggle and heaviness. I had to deal with these intense feelings and not being able to do so with words or thoughts, I did so on canvas.

I'm interested in plan drawings and maps after I was exposed to some beautiful ones when I studied Landscape Architecture. They have their own visual language and beauty. A quarried mountain, the sea, clouds, a river and a busy metropolis inspired this painting.

This is an unusual piece for me because I painted it when I was pretty relaxed and chill. I would often paint when feeling something intense – passion, anger or something I can’t quite put my finger on. This was done when I was in a mellow mood. 🙂

In this piece, I once again used paint that has some shine in it - metallic orange, green and blue and purple with glitter in it - that catches the light in subtle, beautiful, ever-changing ways. This piece be for someone who wants colour and simplicity at the same time.

I would like to encourage everyone to consider using what clothes they have for as long as possible and when something new is needed or wanted, to update it in variety of ways - by yourself, via an artist or a dressmaker/tailor. Our buying less on the whole is needed if we are to stop the climate from changing irreversibly. We buy too much which uses too much energy to be made which emits too much carbon emissions. When the Category 216 Hurricane hits us, what we wear will probably be the LAST THING on our mind. This one piece can be added to over time to create new looks. More art can be added - this could be kept at the neck-line or the edges of the sleeves or in many, many other ways. I would love to embark on this journey with you! It can literally have 10’s of lives ahead of it. If taken care of by gently washing, the art will endure. I have personal pieces that are about 5 years old and look great. They’re great quality and maintain their shape very well. There is no reason that we can’t have reusable, long-term, earth- and wallet-friendly items in our wardrobes.
