Anya is a multi-facetted fashion designer who is the only Caribbean winner of the popular US television series, Project Runway. In Season 9 she wowed the judges and inspired millions with her Caribbean inspired resort wear collection. Anya has been designing since 2008 – as the T&T representative at the Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam, she had the opportunity to design some of her pageant wardrobe. In 2009, she launched her first collection Pilar, named after her younger brother.
A Limited Collection – Just for YOU!
Anya is passionate about living and working in her island home of Trinidad and turning logistical challenges into advantages. Sourcing fabrics in the Caribbean often means there is limited access to large quantities and a less than consistent supply. Anya’s business approach has been to deliberately produce small amounts of each new design. Certainly, this Limited Edition collection – allows each customer the commitment of knowing their purchase is exclusive.
By producing in Trinidad and Tobago, Anya has had the chance to work directly with the highly skilled practitioners who have been trained by her mentor and fellow Trinidadian designer, Meiling. Therefore the line is produced at the highest quality and attention to detail.
Anya’s love for her island and the Caribbean, has led her to a role in social activism, as co-founder and Director of The Together WI Foundation, which has been at the forefront of discussions, music creation and even protests about women’s rights and freedoms, art and activism.
An Entrepreneurial Mind
As an entrepreneur – her projects have been as chic and sophisticated as her designs. She is the co-founder and Design Strategist for social enterprise project – Nudge Caribbean, powered by Massy, where they grow interest in small, medium and micro enterprises with instore marketplaces – #MindfullyMade, #MicroisMighty. Anya has also opened and managed a co-working space called HOME; an avant garde – totally local boutique called Exhibit A and a spectacular café – HOME Cafe in Trinidad.
Additionally, in the last seven years, her love for Carnival was channeled into designing for the largest band in the Caribbean – Tribe. She has also been a co-creative director of The Lost Tribe in its inaugural year. She simultaneously developed the brand, cANYAval, an e-commerce site that sold “Monday Wear” and produced Carnival costumes for LA, Toronto, Barbados and Jamaica, in addition to creating Carnival-inspired events in various cities in the Caribbean and US. This experience is allowing her to segue into her newest venture, Wyldflower.
