Femme De Rouge

US$91.00

A culture is defined by where and who we grow up as. But culture is torn. Identity is torn, in tatters, déchiré. Culture is lost to the intertwining of opposites. Black and white. Master, slave. Daughter to a white that is pure and clean and child of a single black, as shame and sin are. Bred like a fine lady, but treated like a negra. How do I compete for something that will never truly be mine? Acceptance. For whom? Them or myself?

Artist Bio:

Jade Johnatty, aged 15, is a self-taught artist who currently attends Providence Girls’ Catholic School. She has dabbled in acrylics, watercolours, graphite, charcoal, clay, jewellery-making and she sews, but her first love continues to be oil paint. Her work comes from a personal space, and while she admires the classical painting styles of realism, post-impressionism, baroque and fauvism, her personal style is a unique blend, retaining her own individuality.
